What to Do Before You Arrive
While you’re on your way to our office, these quick steps can make a real difference:
For a knocked-out tooth
Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root. Rinse it gently with milk or saline if dirty — do not scrub. Try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it moist in a container of milk or your own saliva. Time matters — the tooth has the best chance of being saved within 30 minutes.
For severe tooth pain
Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed, and apply a cold compress to your cheek to reduce swelling. Do not apply aspirin directly to the tooth or gums — it can damage the tissue.
For a broken tooth
Save any large fragments and rinse them and your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum if you can — it prevents further damage to your tongue and cheeks on the way in.
For bleeding that won’t stop
Apply firm pressure with clean gauze or a clean cloth for at least 15 minutes. If bleeding doesn’t stop, call us immediately — persistent bleeding after a dental injury can signal something more serious.
For swelling or infection
Do not apply heat — it can worsen infection. Rinse with warm salt water and use cold compresses on the outside of your face. If you have swelling that’s spreading, fever, or difficulty swallowing, go to the ER — a spreading dental infection can be life-threatening.
